Oksana Levchenya

Biography

Oksana Levhchenya is a Ukrainian born artist. She lives and works in Kyiv.

Oksana Levhchenya has a singular career.

Her first life is double : Oksana has been a practicing surgeon for 10 years, and she was an it-girl by her marriage and her beauty, invited to the first rows of the fashion shows or starring on the magazine covers.

In a word, she knew how to sew, and she lived the difference between le real and appearencies, that brought her to start a new career, that of a multidisciplinary artist.

Oksana LEVCHENYA started from painting, but she felt hemmed in it. In 2016, she launched her tapestry OLK manufacture. Inspired by the visual ukrainian heritage, the artist is saving the culture of tradional carpet weaving dated from the 16th century. She is preserving the craft and the know-now, but she gives it a new, contemporary reading. Oksana inhabits the old designs, with its floklore and flowers pattens, with the funky heroes like Yoda, Pikachu or Space Invaders, so the two universes collide and the   different characters unite in a dance.

At the same time, Oksana Levchenya is exploring other art forms. « Each person is unique and self-sufficient,  one does not need to belong to a tribe, because each of us represents a tribe of his own », this pphilisophie has driven the creation of masks, that symbolize individuality of human beings, their non)belonging to a groupe. From there, the artist enlarges this new world, and creates the totems for these non exsisting tribes.

Oksana sees the world as a partchwork of creative possibilities, and each new art form that she approaches becomes a step up to another level. Thus, she passes from painting to the tapestry, from tapestry to masks, but also to the unique fashion accessories.. and  then she is moving to the installation and to non-utilitarian objects.  And after that – she revisits vinage furniture… The result of every new stage gives her force and inspiration, like in a video game each step aspires her strength from the new experiments and achievements. So she climbs up, adopting new materials and techniques, her tools always being the shape, the color and the brush or the needle.

Oksana’s works have been seen around the world in such notable art venues as ArtByGeneva Fair in Geneva; National Cultural-Art Museum Complex Mystetskyi Arsenal, FineArt Gallery, Ukrainian House, Bereznytska & Partners Art Gallery in Kyiv, Ukraine; Art gallery Sady Pobedy in Odesa, Ukraine; Art Southampton, New York; Gagliardi Gallery, London; ARTPALMBEACH-2012, Miami; Fondamenta degli Incurabili, Venice or at Revelations fair at Grand Palais in Paris.
