Here is a Parisian apartment.
It is full of memories, objects, smells and furniture that are not mine. But the Old Lady, whom I did not know and who lived there, went to heaven ... And the apartment is now empty, empty of her ... it is empty and full at the same time, it's curious ...
Here is a family photo album ...
All those faces, these poses, those smiles, laughter, children's tears, the happy days of vacations, weddings, baptisms, the dried flowers between the pages ... Still the emptiness and the full. These memories that are not mine. And often, moreover, they belong to no one, because the thread has broken, the family legends are no longer passed on as in the past ...
And what if the walls of this apartment were covered with family photos, but who are also works of art? What if each member of this family was represented, expressed by and with the works of art? Their presence becomes poetic and fluid, their very essence takes on a definite and indefinite form, objective and subjective at the same time ... And the universe of this family, which normally doesn't matter to us, becomes close, touching, familiar. We recognize ourselves there, too, but not because we found there the same furniture or Versailles engravings of our own grandmother, but because we enter the area of the said and unsaid, the most subtleties of the human being, his moods, his dreams, hopes and despair.
"A Family Story" is an exhibition in a traditional Parisian bourgeois apartment. It is an intimate exhibition that has to be be visited alone. To hear your memories jostle in your head, to dive into time and space, hear the creaking of the parquet, speak with spirits and be filled with the secret messages transmitted by the works.
"A Family Story" is an exhibition which reconciles the past of this big apartment and its inhabitants with the present and the future. And this, with the help of art, powerful, timeless, restorative.
