Why collect? Why own? Why this piece and not that one? How to choose? How to arrange the works in harmony with one another… so that the display itself becomes a work of art? This exhibition offers some clues, some answers.
“Under My Skin” is Mell’s collection, kept secret yet ready to share its treasures, her taste, her eye, her choices.
But who is Mell?
A brilliant and competitive woman, for whom a demanding job in industry was no longer enough… To fill the emotional void, seeking respite, a break, a dream, she began collecting photographs, primarily black and white. During her many business trips, she takes pictures of herself, capturing the poetic moments around her.
She collects the works she is attracted to; it's not the artist's fame that guides her choices, but a visible or hidden connection that takes root in her heart upon seeing a piece… what we call love.
In her collection, she has works by established artists, but also by emerging artists, long-established artists, and artists for whom art is a form of therapy for understanding the world. Mell is interested in traditional printing techniques, but also in experimentation: each piece is a wonderful encounter meant to last.
Mell amasses artworks, she accumulates love, and it overflows everywhere: no more room on the walls, they sit everywhere, juxtaposed, conversing with one another.
Sometimes Mell gets carried away and acquires a drawing, an object, or a painting. These departures from photography suit her perfectly.
Mell is passionate about the image of the body, but not only for its purely aesthetic qualities.
Because we understand: "Under My Skin" is a quest for self-discovery, exploring one's nature, essence, and innermost self.
What is beneath the skin? There is "me." The "me" that suffers, that endures, that doubts, that changes, that grows.
The skin is a screen for our psyche; it is a symbol of our inner selves. It bears the marks of our journey, our encounters, and our attachments. Yes, it's a fictional collection…
"Under My Skin" is an invitation to discover the artworks within the intimacy of a Parisian apartment, to discover how an accumulation forms a narrative.
And you, which is your favorite work in the show?
